Akwa Ibom Launches Enrollment Drive to Tackle Out-of-School Children Ahead of New Academic Session

Uyo, Nigeria | September 9, 2025 — The Akwa Ibom State Government has rolled out an enrollment campaign targeted at reducing the rising number of out-of-school children as preparations for the new academic session intensify.

The initiative, spearheaded by the State Ministry of Education, aims to ensure that every school-aged child in the state has access to quality education. Officials have embarked on community sensitization, school mobilization, and advocacy visits to encourage parents and guardians to register their wards in both primary and secondary schools.

Governor Umo Eno emphasized that education remains a priority of his administration, noting that the state is committed to providing free and compulsory education at the basic level. He explained that the enrollment drive is part of broader efforts to combat illiteracy, reduce child labour, and secure a better future for the state’s young population.

Commissioner for Education, Idongesit Etiebet, noted that the government has also distributed learning materials and undertaken the rehabilitation of public schools to create a conducive learning environment. She added that monitoring teams have been deployed across the state to ensure compliance and prevent children from being left out of the education system.

Community leaders and parents have lauded the initiative, urging the government to sustain the momentum and address challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, and shortage of teachers.
