In a devastating turn of events, the Kebbi State Police Command has confirmed that 16 people were killed in a bandit attack on the villages of Tungan Taura and Tungan Ladan in the Augie Local Government Area. The assault occurred on Saturday, April 6, 2025, around 6:00 PM, when heavily armed bandits, suspected to be members of the notorious Lakurawa group, stormed the villages. The bandits not only took lives but also rustled an unspecified number of cattle, leaving the community in a state of shock and grief.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Bello M. Sani, condemned the attack and assured the public that swift justice would be served. He announced the deployment of additional tactical teams comprising the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilantes to the affected areas. The police have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies, reaffirming their commitment to protecting lives and property throughout the state.
This incident is part of a broader wave of banditry affecting northern Nigeria, particularly in states like Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, and Niger. The Lakurawa group, known for its sophisticated weapons and coordination, has been involved in several attacks in recent months, often targeting border communities between Nigeria and Niger Republic.
The Kebbi State Police Command has been actively working to combat these threats, including the recent killing of a notorious bandit leader, Maigemu, which may have prompted some of the recent attacks as acts of revenge. Despite these challenges, the police remain resolute in their efforts to restore peace and security to the region.
