Big Takeoff: Mbah Launches Enugu Air as FG Hands Over Airport to Private Investors

The Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has officially unveiled a new state-owned airline named Enugu Air, marking a major step toward transforming the state into a top investment and tourism destination. The unveiling took place on Monday with much fanfare and the presence of Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

Governor Mbah, speaking with pride and passion, described the launch as a dream taking flight. “This is not just another announcement. It is proof of a clear and bold vision we set from day one. We promised to make Enugu the number one spot for investment, living, and tourism in Nigeria. And now, Enugu Air gives wings to that promise,” he said.

Mbah noted that the creation of the airline is part of a broader push to boost the state’s economic potential and global presence. “With this airline, we are opening doors to new opportunities. Enugu Air is more than just flights. It is about flying our people and our dreams into the future,” he added.

In a related development, Minister Keyamo confirmed that the federal government has concessioned the Akanu Ibiam International Airport to private investors. This means the airport will now be managed by private hands, not sold outright, to improve services and boost economic activity.

“We are not selling the Enugu airport,” Keyamo clarified. “We are giving it to private investors through a legal process supported by the President, FAAN, the Ministry of Aviation, and the National Assembly. They will modernise the airport, especially the cargo terminal.”

According to the Minister, the cargo terminal will allow goods to be exported directly from Enugu, creating jobs and business opportunities for people in the state.

With the launch of Enugu Air and the airport concession, Enugu is now positioning itself as a rising star in Nigeria’s aviation and economic landscape.
