Buhari Believed Strongly in Rule of Law, Though He Was Uncomfortable with Politics – Amina Mohammed

Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed, has described former President Muhammadu Buhari as a leader who upheld the rule of law, even though he remained visibly uncomfortable with the murky waters of politics.

Speaking during a recent public dialogue in Abuja on governance and leadership in Africa, Amina shared personal insights into her working relationship with the former president, under whom she served as Minister of Environment before joining the UN in 2017.

According to her, Buhari often expressed disinterest in the political intrigues that usually dominate Nigerian leadership, but remained committed to institutional discipline and lawful governance.

“President Buhari was never comfortable with the politics — the deals, the negotiations, and the compromises. But what he believed in was the rule of law. He wanted things done by the book,” Amina remarked.

She noted that the former president’s adherence to due process often drew criticism from those who preferred shortcuts, but added that his legacy would be remembered for the stability he tried to instill in the nation’s governance framework.

Amina also highlighted how Buhari’s disposition impacted cabinet dynamics, where ministers were expected to show initiative and deliver without relying heavily on political maneuvering.

“His leadership style demanded a lot of self-discipline and personal responsibility. He didn’t indulge you, but he gave you space to work — if you were committed,” she added.

The UN official urged current and future leaders in Nigeria to combine strong institutional values with democratic principles to foster national development, especially as the country navigates complex challenges in governance, economy, and global diplomacy.
