Nigerian international and Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has been named Fulham’s Player of the Season for the 2024/25 campaign following a stellar performance in the English Premier League.
Bassey secured the top honour after garnering 39.6% of the total votes in the club’s annual fan poll. He was closely followed by fellow Nigerian international Alex Iwobi, who polled 21.5%, while American left-back Antonee Robinson came third with 19.9%. Goalkeeper Bernd Leno (10.9%) and midfielder Saša Lukić (8.1%) rounded out the top five.
The 25-year-old defender, who joined Fulham from Ajax in the summer of 2023, improved on his performance from last season, where he finished second in the voting. This year, he emerged as the clear favourite following his consistent displays and leadership in Fulham’s backline.
Bassey featured in 35 out of Fulham’s 38 Premier League matches, amassing 3,074 minutes of play. He started 34 times and came off the bench once, playing a key role in the club’s historic 54-point finish, the highest in Fulham’s Premier League history. Although the team narrowly missed out on European qualification, finishing 11th, Bassey’s performances were widely credited for their impressive run.
“Thank you guys for voting me Player of the Season,” Bassey said in his appreciation message.
“I want to thank God, without Him, I wouldn’t be where I am. Big up to all my team, even those not at the Club who have supported me. Special thanks to the coaching staff and the Manager for their trust. Hopefully, we can do amazing things next season.”
The Nigerian defender also contributed offensively, scoring two goals across all competitions. He netted in the league during a 2–1 victory over Nottingham Forest on February 15, and also found the back of the net at Old Trafford in Fulham’s FA Cup win against Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Alex Iwobi, who also had an outstanding season, recorded nine goals and six assists, making him Fulham’s second-highest scorer behind Raúl Jiménez (12 goals).
Iwobi made history as the first Nigerian player to appear in all 38 Premier League matchdays for two consecutive seasons. He came off the bench in Fulham’s final game of the season, a home loss to Manchester City, further underlining his consistency and durability.
Fulham fans and pundits alike have hailed both Bassey and Iwobi for their exceptional performances, which have significantly boosted the club’s profile and competitiveness in the league.
