Cancer Advocates, Survivors Tee Off at Charity Golf Tournament in Lagos

No fewer than 100 golfers, including cancer survivors, are set to gather at the prestigious Ikoyi Golf Club on Thursday, May 8, for the third edition of the Foundation for Cancer Care’s charity golf tournament, themed Swing Against Cancer Golf Day. The event is aimed at raising both awareness and funds to combat the rising burden of cancer in Nigeria.

Participants will compete in teams of four in a spirited team format designed not only to foster camaraderie but also to serve a deeper purpose — supporting critical outreach and treatment initiatives spearheaded by the foundation. This year’s tournament holds particular significance, as proceeds will go towards the purchase of a modern mobile cancer screening bus and funding for radiotherapy treatment for underserved patients across the country.

Among the headline participants is cancer survivor and awareness advocate, Farooq Oreagba, whose inspirational journey and commitment to the cause have made him a symbol of hope and resilience. His involvement is expected to boost morale and underscore the transformative power of early diagnosis and adequate treatment.

Chairman of the Foundation, Professor Chumy Nwogu, underscored the importance of the event in the broader context of cancer care in Nigeria. He stressed that awareness and early detection remain the most effective tools in the fight against the disease, especially in regions where access to diagnostic and therapeutic services is limited.

The tournament promises not only engaging sportsmanship but a reaffirmation of community support for those affected by cancer. As the golfers take to the green, their swings will echo a unified call for better healthcare infrastructure, more inclusive access to life-saving treatment, and sustained awareness campaigns to confront one of the world’s leading causes of mortality.
