Cazorla Signs Oviedo Extension at 40, Set for La Liga Return

Santi Cazorla has penned a one-year contract extension with Real Oviedo, the club announced on Saturday, keeping the 40-year-old midfield maestro at his boyhood team as they prepare for life back in La Liga.

The former Arsenal and Villarreal star rejoined Oviedo in August 2023 and played a crucial role in guiding the Asturian side back to Spain’s top flight for the first time in 24 years. Cazorla will turn 41 in December but remains a vital presence both on and off the pitch for the newly promoted outfit.

A two-time European Championship winner with Spain in 2008 and 2012, Cazorla has enjoyed a storied career at both international and club level. During his six-year spell at Arsenal, he won the FA Cup twice and became a fan favourite for his creativity, vision and technical brilliance.

Real Oviedo hailed the contract renewal as a symbolic moment in the club’s history, celebrating the return of one of their greatest sons to the top tier of Spanish football.

“With this renewal, Santi Cazorla, a symbol and emblem of Oviedo, proves that dreams, when pursued with the heart, come true,” the club said in a statement.

“Real Oviedo have secured the leadership of a footballer who embodies the club’s values like few others, both on and off the field.”

Cazorla’s extension ensures he will be part of Oviedo’s emotional return to La Liga, a season that promises to be one of the most memorable chapters yet in the veteran midfielder’s remarkable career.
