Commonwealth Scholars Warn of Education and Governance Crisis in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria | September 9, 2025

The Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association of Nigeria (COSFAN) has expressed deep concern over the state of Nigeria’s education system and the country’s broader governance challenges, urging urgent reforms to prevent further decline.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, the association noted that the current trajectory of the education sector poses a grave threat to national development. The group lamented the poor infrastructure, underfunding, and widening digital divide in schools, warning that millions of young Nigerians risk being left behind in a fast-changing global economy.

Beyond education, COSFAN also highlighted governance shortcomings, stressing that issues such as corruption, insecurity, and weak policy implementation are undermining Nigeria’s growth potential. The scholars insisted that without accountability and visionary leadership, the nation risks squandering its human and natural resources.

The association called on government at all levels to prioritize educational reforms, strengthen institutions, and embrace inclusive policies that will give young Nigerians access to quality learning and innovation-driven opportunities. It further urged civil society, private sector, and international partners to complement government efforts in rebuilding confidence in Nigeria’s future.

According to COSFAN, tackling the twin challenges of education and governance is essential if Nigeria is to secure long-term stability and prosperity.
