The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, situated in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos State, is currently undergoing strategic upgrades aimed at raising its crude oil refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to an impressive 700,000 barrels daily. This move comes as part of the company’s broader ambition to solidify Nigeria’s position as a leading refining hub on the African continent while significantly reducing the country’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
According to industry insiders close to the ongoing operations, the enhancement process involves fine-tuning various components within the refinery’s core systems to enable it handle a larger volume of crude without compromising processing efficiency or output quality. While the refinery has already begun producing diesel and aviation fuel, preparations are underway for the full-scale rollout of premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, in the coming months.
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and the founder of the Dangote Group, had earlier disclosed that the facility, touted as the largest single-train refinery in the world, will transform the downstream sector by providing refined products for both domestic use and export. He emphasized that the refinery has the potential to meet all of Nigeria’s fuel consumption needs while exporting surplus output to neighboring West African nations and beyond.
With global crude oil markets constantly evolving and Nigeria’s refineries operating far below capacity for decades, the Dangote Refinery is seen as a game-changer. Its expansion to 700,000 barrels per day not only strengthens national energy security but also promises to conserve foreign exchange previously spent on fuel imports. Furthermore, it is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs while supporting ancillary industries tied to petrochemical processing, logistics, and engineering services.
