Dino Melaye Summoned to Abuja Court Over Alleged ₦509.6m Tax Liability

Abuja, Nigeria | August 28, 2025

Former Kogi West senator, Dino Melaye, has been summoned by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone II, to appear on September 5, 2025, over allegations of failure to pay personal income tax and under-declaration of earnings.

According to court filings cited by the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS), the summons, dated August 21, 2025, follows an assessment of Melaye’s tax liabilities for 2023 at ₦234,896,000 and 2024 at ₦274,712,000, totaling about ₦509,608,000. The FCT-IRS stated that an administrative assessment was first issued on May 23, 2025, and, after no objection was filed within the statutory period, a best-judgment assessment was raised on June 23, 2025.

The revenue service further revealed that Melaye’s declared tax remittances in previous years were significantly lower than his declared income. It cited payments of ₦85,000.08 in 2019, ₦100,000.08 in 2020, ₦120,000 in 2021, and ₦1,000,000 in 2022, despite declarations of higher annual earnings — including an income of over ₦6.5 million in 2022.

The court has warned that failure to file an objection within 30 days would make the assessments final and recoverable by enforcement.

As of press time, Dino Melaye has not publicly responded to the allegations, and the case is scheduled for hearing on September 5, 2025, in Abuja.
