Nigeria Women Football League champions Edo Queens continued their unbeaten streak with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Abia Angels at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Wednesday.
The defending champions took the lead in the 35th minute through a penalty kick scored by winger Osigwu Goodness. Despite a strong comeback from the hosts, Edo Queens’ experience and solid defending helped them maintain their advantage.
In the second half, Esther Moses doubled Edo Queens’ lead in the 61st minute, silencing the Abia Angels’ supporters. Although Lucky Mary scored a consolation goal for Abia Angels in the 76th minute, Edo Queens held on to secure the three points.
With this victory, Edo Queens remain unbeaten with 23 points from nine games, maintaining their top spot in Group A of the abridged league.
Coach Moses Aduku praised his players for taking their chances, despite the challenging playing conditions. “The turf did not allow us to play good football, but I commend my girls for taking the chances they had,” he said.
Aduku’s focus is now on the next game against Heartland Queens, emphasizing the importance of taking it one game at a time. He also expressed his dream of playing in the CAF Champions League again, having lost in the semi-final of the last edition.
The win for Edo Queens sets them up for a thrilling encounter against Heartland Queens next Wednesday. Will they maintain their unbeaten streak? Only time will tell.
