In a significant move to enhance the welfare of civil servants, Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State announced an increase in the state’s minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦75,000. The announcement was made during the Workers’ Day celebration held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday, May 1, 2025.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the workforce for their dedication and emphasized the administration’s commitment to improving workers’ living standards. He stated, “Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 per month for Edo workers. It’s our way of saying thank you, Edo workers. We believe this will make a real difference, and in return, we count on your renewed dedication as we build a better Edo together.”
The governor highlighted several initiatives undertaken since assuming office to bolster the state’s workforce. These include the conversion of over 1,000 casual workers, such as cleaners, into the core civil service, providing them with job security. Additionally, the administration has recruited 500 new teachers to alleviate classroom pressures and is reviewing the status of over 3,000 casual teachers for potential full employment.
In the healthcare sector, the state has approved the recruitment of 450 clinical and non-clinical staff for state hospitals and regularized 126 contract staff at the Edo State Specialist Hospital. These measures aim to strengthen the health system and improve job stability for health professionals.
Governor Okpebholo’s announcement positions Edo State as one of the states with the highest minimum wage in Nigeria, reflecting a proactive approach to workers’ welfare. The move has been met with appreciation from various labor unions and is expected to set a precedent for other states to follow.
As the state continues to prioritize the well-being of its workers, the administration’s efforts underscore a commitment to fostering a motivated and secure workforce, essential for the state’s overall development.
