Esther Okoronkwo Crowned Super Falcons’ Fans’ Player at WAFCON 2025

Rabat, Morocco – Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has been voted Fans’ Player of the Tournament at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations following her match-winning performances that secured Nigeria’s record 10th continental title.

The Nigerian Football Federation announced the fan-voted award via its official X handle on Tuesday, celebrating Okoronkwo’s clutch contributions during the championship. “Clutch. Composed. Crowned by the people,” the post read, accompanied by images of the 28-year-old in action.

Okoronkwo emerged as Nigeria’s tournament talisman, delivering decisive moments when it mattered most. She sparked the Falcons’ 5-0 quarterfinal rout of Zambia with a goal and two assists before orchestrating the dramatic 3-2 final comeback against hosts Morocco.

Trailing 2-0, the striker calmly converted a 60th-minute penalty, assisted Folashade Ijamilusi’s equalizer, then delivered the perfect free-kick for Jennifer Echegini’s 88th-minute winner – earning Player of the Match honors in the final.

The Enugu-born star topped a six-player shortlist that included Echegini, captain Rasheedat Ajibade (tournament MVP), Ashleigh Plumptre, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Ijamilusi. Her award complements inclusion in CAF’s Team of the Tournament alongside teammates Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie and Ajibade.

“This recognition from fans means everything,” Okoronkwo said through the team’s media channel. “Scoring for Nigeria in a WAFCON final is a dream I’ll never forget.”

The striker’s heroics have elevated her profile globally, with European clubs reportedly monitoring the newly decorated Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) recipient. Her performances exemplified the Falcons’ resilient campaign under coach Justine Madugu, cementing Nigeria’s continental dominance.

Okoronkwo and her teammates are expected to receive a heroes’ welcome upon their return to Nigeria this week, with celebrations planned to honor their historic achievement.
