The Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama on Thursday granted bail to suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District. The court set her bail at N50 million, with the presiding judge, Justice Chizoba Orji, rejecting the Federal Government’s application to remand the senator in custody during the pendency of her trial.
Justice Orji ruled that there was sufficient assurance that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan would attend all her court proceedings, thereby negating any justification for detention. The judge further stipulated that as part of her bail conditions, the senator must present a credible surety who owns property in Abuja and maintains a reputable standing within the community.
The ruling referenced provisions under the 1999 Constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, underscoring the legal framework guiding the court’s decision on bail.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan faces a three-count charge arising from remarks she made during a live broadcast on Channels Television on April 3, 2025. The Federal Government alleges that the senator made false and malicious claims accusing the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, of orchestrating an assassination attempt against her.
According to the prosecution, the senator’s statements were intended to malign the reputation of the political figures involved. She is charged under Section 391 of the Penal Code and may face penalties under Section 392 if convicted.
The charge sheet lists several key witnesses, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former Governor Yahaya Bello, two police officers, a serving senator, and an additional individual.
The court adjourned the matter until September 23, 2025, for the continuation of the trial. The development adds another chapter to the politically charged legal battle that has captured nationwide attention.
