FG Converts Over 100,000 Vehicles to CNG in One Year, Marks Major Shift to Cleaner Energy

Abuja, Nigeria – June 27, 2025 — The Federal Government has revealed that over 100,000 petrol-powered vehicles have been successfully converted to run on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) within the past year, describing the development as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing shift towards cleaner and more affordable energy alternatives.

This disclosure was made as part of the government’s progress update on the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), a key component of the post-fuel subsidy removal agenda aimed at mitigating high fuel costs and reducing carbon emissions.

According to officials from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources and the PCNGi leadership, the vehicle conversions span both private and commercial transport sectors, including taxis, buses, and fleet vehicles operating in major urban centres across the country.

The initiative has not only helped cut fuel costs for transport operators but is also contributing to Nigeria’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in line with global climate action targets.

“This achievement demonstrates the administration’s determination to provide practical, long-term energy solutions that benefit both the environment and the Nigerian economy,” a spokesperson stated.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the CNG program, with plans underway to establish more conversion centres, increase awareness, and encourage local manufacturing of conversion kits and CNG-powered vehicles.

Stakeholders in the transport and energy sectors have commended the initiative, urging the Federal Government to sustain momentum and provide incentives that will encourage broader adoption nationwide.
