Aare Ona Kakanfo and National Coordinator of Oodua Peoples Congress, Gani Adams, has called on the Federal and state governments to increase investment in promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage to drive tourism and boost foreign earnings. Speaking at the Olumo festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Adams emphasized the potential of the tourism sector to generate revenue and create jobs.
Adams described the tourism sector as a “gold mine” that can be mined forever, unlike finite mineral resources. He highlighted insecurity as a major challenge to harnessing economic opportunities in tourism, urging governments to create an enabling environment. Citing examples of countries like Thailand and Britain, which generate significant revenue from tourism, Adams called for increased investment in the sector.
The OPC leader praised the people of Egbaland for celebrating the annual Lisabi Festival, projected to contribute N10 billion to the nation’s economy. He described the festival as a unifying factor and a homecoming for Egba sons and daughters worldwide, promoting unity and cohesion.
Adams’ call to prioritize tourism development is supported by his recent visit to Egypt, where he witnessed the country’s successful tourism industry. He urged the Nigerian government to learn from Egypt’s experience and develop its own tourism sector.
The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun for promising to renovate the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre, including fixing faulty elevators. The event highlights the potential of tourism to drive economic growth and development in Nigeria.
