Ghana Edge South Africa on Penalties to Clinch Bronze at WAFCON 2024

Ghana’s Black Queens secured the third-place medal at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over South Africa on Friday, July 25, 2025.

The tightly contested bronze medal match, held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, ended 1-1 after regulation time. Both teams displayed tactical discipline and attacking flair, but neither could find a winning goal in extra time, forcing the encounter into penalties.

Ghana emerged victorious in the shootout with a 5-3 scoreline, thanks to decisive spot-kicks and a crucial save by goalkeeper Cynthia Findiib. The win marks Ghana’s return to the WAFCON podium for the first time in over a decade and brings a positive end to their strong tournament campaign.

South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, who came into the tournament as defending champions, were left disappointed after missing out on both the title and a podium finish.

The Ghanaian team was hailed for their resilience throughout the tournament, with head coach Nora Häuptle commending her squad for their determination and improved performance compared to previous editions.

With this result, Ghana takes home the bronze medal while preparing to build on the momentum for future competitions, including the qualifiers for the next FIFA Women’s World Cup.
