Guinness Nigeria Plc, the country’s leading total beverage alcohol company, is commemorating its 75th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its journey of brewing excellence, innovation, and community development. Established in 1950, the company opened its first brewery in Lagos in 1962, becoming the first Guinness brewery outside Ireland and the UK.
Over the decades, Guinness Nigeria has become more than just a beverage company; it has evolved into a cultural icon woven into the fabric of Nigerian society. Its diverse portfolio, including Guinness Foreign Extra Stout, Malta Guinness, Orijin, Smirnoff, Dubic Malt, and Gordon’s, has been a constant presence in everyday moments, family celebrations, and national milestones.
Managing Director Girish Sharma reflected on the company’s legacy, stating, “Guinness Nigeria has evolved into more than a company. It has become a national treasure, woven into the fabric of Nigerian culture through the generations. From its iconic brands to its enduring values, the company has become a symbol of resilience, quality, and shared celebration.”
In line with its commitment to social responsibility, Guinness Nigeria has initiated several community development projects. Through its long-standing Guinness Eye Centres in Lagos and Onitsha, the company sponsors free eye surgeries to restore sight and improve lives. Its Water of Life programme has provided access to clean drinking water for over 500,000 Nigerians. Additionally, the Plan-W initiative has empowered over a thousand women with entrepreneurship and financial literacy skills, while the Guinness Nigeria Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme supports bright students across the country in pursuing quality education.
To commemorate the 75th anniversary, Guinness Nigeria is rolling out a series of activities, including the launch of a commemorative documentary, limited-edition bottles, a nationwide consumer promotion, and staff-focused celebrations such as interdepartmental football tournaments and parties across its Lagos, Benin, and field locations.
The anniversary also marks a new era for the company following a recent change in majority shareholding. This transition is unlocking opportunities for greater local agility, deeper supply chain investment, and accelerated innovation, reinforcing Guinness Nigeria’s identity as a proudly Nigerian company operating with global standards.
As Guinness Nigeria celebrates this significant milestone, it reaffirms its dedication to brewing greatness and building for more, with a continued focus on quality, innovation, and community impact.
