The Oyo State Government has announced that the Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan will resume local flight operations before the end of 2025, while full international services are expected to commence in 2026.
This development was confirmed on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, in a statement issued in Ibadan. According to him, the airport is currently undergoing comprehensive upgrades aimed at transforming it into a world-class international aviation hub.
Oyelade revealed that the ongoing reconstruction efforts include the extension of the runway from 2,400 metres to 3,000 metres, alongside a widening from 45 to 60 metres. These improvements are designed to accommodate larger, wide-body aircraft and meet global aviation standards.
He further stated that significant progress has been made in upgrading the airport’s critical systems. The airfield lighting has been modernised to Category C standard, while firefighting capabilities have also been scaled up to enhance safety across the facility. Customs, Immigration, and other key border agencies are being fully integrated into the airport structure in line with international requirements.
“Currently, the runway, taxiway, apron, and blast pads have reached 55% completion. These components are on track to be finalised before the year runs out, subject to approval from the relevant aviation regulatory bodies, allowing the recommencement of domestic flights,” Oyelade said.
In terms of international readiness, he disclosed that the construction of the new terminal building has reached 15% completion. The terminal is projected to be fully operational by June 2026, setting the stage for the launch of international flight services.
He emphasised that the upgrades align with Governor Seyi Makinde’s vision of repositioning the Ibadan airport into a globally competitive aviation facility. “By upgrading our infrastructure to accommodate larger aircraft and enhance operational efficiency, we are not just expanding domestic connectivity but also opening Oyo State to international travel and commerce,” he added.
Oyelade also reaffirmed the governor’s pledge that pilgrims from the state will depart for the 2026 Hajj directly from the upgraded Ibadan airport, marking a significant milestone in its elevation to international status.
The airport renovation was officially flagged off on September 18, 2024. It was temporarily closed in March 2025 to accelerate the pace of work. Once completed, the facility is expected to play a crucial role in driving economic growth, tourism, and investment within the state and beyond.
