Jordan Henderson Earns England Recall Following Ajax Switch as Pickford Hails Veteran’s Influence

Jordan Henderson has been recalled to the England squad for March’s international friendlies against Brazil and Belgium, with manager Gareth Southgate citing the midfielder’s January transfer to Ajax as pivotal to his return. The 33-year-old’s inclusion comes after a challenging six-month spell in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, reigniting his hopes of securing a spot in England’s Euro 2024 campaign.

Southgate emphasized Henderson’s resurgence at Ajax, where he has made eight appearances since joining the Dutch giants, as central to the decision. “Henderson’s move to a European club playing high-level football allowed us to reassess his situation,” Southgate stated. “His experience and leadership remain invaluable, especially in a transitional phase for the squad.”

The England boss also addressed criticism over Henderson’s prior move to Saudi Arabia, acknowledging the “debate” but stressing the player’s consistent professionalism. “He’s shown resilience. At Ajax, he’s competing in meaningful matches, which aligns with our standards,” Southgate added.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, a longtime England teammate, lauded Henderson’s influence both on and off the pitch. “Hendo’s a born leader. His presence lifts the group, and he sets the tone in training every single day,” Pickford said. “Having someone with his trophy-winning mentality and 81 caps is massive for the younger lads. He’s proven time and again how vital he is to England.”

Henderson’s recall marks a swift reversal after being omitted from October’s squad amid scrutiny over his Saudi Pro League move. His January switch to Ajax, where he has reclaimed a starting role, restored his visibility in a competitive European league. The former Liverpool captain has been a mainstay under Southgate, featuring in the past five major tournaments and playing a key role in England’s 2018 World Cup run and Euro 2020 final appearance.

With Euro 2024 looming, Southgate’s squad faces critical tests against Brazil (March 23) and Belgium (March 26) at Wembley. Henderson’s return bolsters midfield options alongside Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, while his mentorship could prove crucial in integrating emerging talents like Kobbie Mainoo and Curtis Jones.

“Every squad needs balance,” Southgate remarked. “Jordan’s experience isn’t just about his ability on the ball—it’s about guiding the team through high-pressure moments. That’s why he’s back.”
