The revered city of Makkah is set to witness a deeply spiritual and historic moment as the Kiswah, the ceremonial cloth that enrobes the Holy Kaaba, is replaced on Saturday, June 7, 2025. This date coincides with 1st Muharram, 1447 AH, heralding the beginning of the Islamic New Year.
This time honoured tradition, though once aligned with the Hajj pilgrimage during the Day of Arafat, has in recent years been rescheduled by Saudi authorities to coincide with the first day of the Hijri calendar. The change was made to enhance the significance of the new Islamic year and ensure better logistical arrangements for the sacred ceremony.
The Kiswah, a majestic black silk cloth intricately adorned with Quranic calligraphy embroidered in gold and silver threads, is not merely a textile. It is a symbol of reverence, history, and devotion, representing the unity of the Muslim Ummah around the world. Its preparation is a months long process, meticulously carried out by skilled artisans and technicians at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Kiswah Manufacturing, located in Makkah itself.
The complex employs expert seamsters and specialists, many of whom are part of generational legacies that have served in the making of the Kiswah. Their work is considered both an honour and a trust, involving precise handiwork and spiritual dedication. The entire process, from dyeing the silk to the delicate embroidery, is supervised with strict attention to religious, artistic, and cultural detail.
On the day of the replacement, a dedicated team from the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques conducts the ceremonial installation of the new cloth. The event typically takes place in the early hours of the morning when the Kaaba is cleared of pilgrims and visitors. It is a solemn moment, accompanied by prayers, spiritual reflection, and broadcast live globally via the Makkah Live channel, allowing millions of Muslims to partake in the blessing of the occasion from afar.
