Kano, Nigeria | September 15, 2025 — The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has restored power supply to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) following a period of blackout that disrupted operations at the medical facility.
The hospital, one of the largest referral centres in Northern Nigeria, had faced challenges in recent days due to unstable electricity supply, raising concerns over the impact on critical services such as emergency care, surgical procedures, and intensive care units.
In a statement on Monday, KEDCO’s Head of Corporate Communications confirmed that supply had been stabilised after the company carried out technical interventions to address the fault that caused the outage. He assured that the hospital has now been prioritised for uninterrupted electricity supply given its strategic role in healthcare delivery.
“KEDCO recognises the importance of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in saving lives, and as such, we have taken immediate steps to ensure power is restored and sustained,” the statement read.
Hospital officials expressed relief over the restoration, noting that while standby generators had been deployed during the blackout, the cost of fueling and maintaining them was unsustainable. They welcomed KEDCO’s assurance, adding that stable power supply is critical to maintaining life-saving equipment and running the facility’s laboratories.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of reliable power infrastructure in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, where frequent outages often compromise service delivery in hospitals and clinics across the country.
