LAGOS – In a bid to reduce the growing traffic jam on major Lagos roads, the state government has temporarily lifted the restriction on the use of Bus Rapid Transit lanes along the Eko Bridge and Odo Iya Alaro corridors.
The move, announced on Wednesday, is aimed at easing the heavy traffic caused by the ongoing repair works on the Ifako Bridge, which has led to the partial closure of the Ifako bound carriageway on the Third Mainland Bridge.
Mr Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, issued the directive and described it as a timely response to the intense gridlock that Lagosians have been facing in recent days.
According to a statement signed by Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the suspension of the BRT lane rule is temporary and comes with conditions.
The state government says the change will allow for smoother vehicle movement on these key routes during the period of road repairs. However, officials also warned that the new measure does not give drivers the freedom to drive recklessly or abuse the privilege.
“This is not a permanent change,” the statement noted. “It is a smart way to give Lagos residents some relief while we work on fixing the road network.”
The government is also urging all road users to obey traffic rules and cooperate with LASTMA officers who will be on ground to manage the situation.
