In a bid to strengthen environmental health standards and ensure safer medical practices, the Lagos State Government has commenced a comprehensive training programme for health facility managers across the state on effective healthcare waste management.
The training, spearheaded by the Lagos State Ministry of Health in collaboration with relevant environmental agencies, began on Monday, July 7, 2025. It aims to equip administrators of both public and private health institutions with the knowledge and tools to properly handle, segregate, and dispose of medical waste in compliance with international best practices.
Speaking at the opening session, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, emphasized the urgent need for better healthcare waste disposal systems. He noted that improper handling of medical waste poses significant risks to public health and the environment.
“The government is committed to ensuring that all health facilities in Lagos adopt standardized waste management procedures to protect patients, health workers, and the wider community. This training will help achieve that goal,” Dr. Ogboye said.
Experts from the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and other stakeholders facilitated the sessions, covering topics such as waste segregation techniques, treatment and disposal methods, legal requirements, and infection prevention.
Participants applauded the initiative, describing it as timely and crucial in light of increasing medical activities and the associated environmental impact.
The training forms part of the state’s broader strategy under the T.H.E.M.E.S+ development agenda to enhance healthcare delivery and ensure a cleaner, safer Lagos for all.
