The Lagos State Government has intensified its commitment to repositioning the state as a leading global tourism destination through strategic international partnerships and year-round cultural engagements.
Speaking during an official engagement on the state’s tourism outlook, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, revealed that Lagos is deepening its ties with international stakeholders to drive tourism investment, cultural exchange, and sustainable development within the sector.
According to the commissioner, the state is no longer limiting tourism activities to the festive season alone, but is now pursuing a deliberate strategy to ensure that Lagos becomes a “City of Festivals” where visitors can enjoy cultural and leisure experiences all year round.
“Tourism is no longer a seasonal affair in Lagos. With our rich cultural heritage, vibrant arts scene, and innovative approach to entertainment and hospitality, Lagos is evolving into a global cultural hub,” she said.
As part of its efforts, the Lagos State Government has invested over ₦8.4 billion in more than 140 tourism-related events and cultural festivals between May 2024 and May 2025. These include music concerts, film and fashion shows, visual arts exhibitions, food festivals, and traditional celebrations such as the Fanti Carnival and Boat Regatta.
Benson-Awoyinka emphasized the administration’s plan to transform historical and heritage sites across the state into well-managed tourism destinations. She reiterated the government’s openness to partnering with the private sector to develop these locations and enhance the visitor experience.
“Our goal is not only to showcase Lagos to the world but also to create jobs, support local creatives, and generate revenue that will fuel further development. We welcome investments that align with this vision,” she added.
The commissioner further stated that the ongoing reforms and collaborations are in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s T.H.E.M.E.S+ agenda, which prioritizes tourism, arts, and culture as critical drivers of economic growth, youth empowerment, and international visibility.
With these initiatives, Lagos aims to solidify its place on the global tourism map, positioning itself as a must-visit destination for cultural exploration, entertainment, and investment opportunities.
