Lagos Students Tackle Malaria Through Statewide Quiz Competition

Students from public secondary schools across Lagos State gathered recently to engage in a spirited intellectual contest aimed at combating malaria through education and awareness. The 2025 Inter-School Malaria Quiz Competition, held at the Combo Hall of Lagos Television, was organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Health as part of efforts to deepen malaria knowledge among young people.

The competition brought together participants from all six education districts in the state, with questions focused on malaria prevention, treatment, transmission, and the importance of early diagnosis. The event formed part of the state’s strategic approach to malaria control by empowering students with the knowledge to protect themselves and serve as health ambassadors in their communities.

Education District VI emerged as the overall winner, showcasing a strong understanding of key malaria facts and control strategies. The victory was hailed by health officials and educators as a sign of growing health consciousness among Lagos students.

Speaking at the event, representatives from the Lagos State Ministry of Health stressed the importance of consistent public education in the fight against malaria, one of Nigeria’s leading causes of morbidity and mortality. They noted that despite increased access to treatment, many cases still go undiagnosed due to low awareness, particularly among youths.

The Commissioner for Health, who was represented at the event, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to reducing malaria cases through robust health education and community engagement. He urged school administrators to incorporate malaria education into extracurricular activities, while calling on parents and guardians to ensure children sleep under insecticide-treated nets and seek prompt medical care at the onset of symptoms.

Health experts also used the platform to advocate for regular malaria testing and improved hygiene practices in homes and schools. The initiative, they said, is key to achieving the state’s goal of a malaria-free Lagos.

At the close of the programme, all participating schools received educational materials and malaria prevention kits, including treated nets and mosquito repellents. Organisers expressed hope that the competition would inspire students to take health matters seriously and become agents of change in their various communities.
