LASG Advocates Cleanliness Culture, Promotes Sanitation Awareness Across Communities

Lagos, Nigeria – July, 2025

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to promoting a culture of cleanliness and good sanitation practices among residents, stressing that maintaining a healthy environment is a collective responsibility vital to public health and urban sustainability.

Speaking during a special community clean-up exercise organised to commemorate the 2025 National Environmental Sanitation Day, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasised the importance of behavioural change towards hygiene and waste management at the grassroots level.

“Environmental sanitation is not a one-off activity. It must become a lifestyle. We must begin to take ownership of our surroundings and actively ensure that our homes, markets, streets, and public spaces remain clean,” Wahab stated.

The Commissioner, represented by senior officials from the ministry, led staff and volunteers in a massive clean-up exercise across various communities in the state, including densely populated areas such as Mushin, Ajegunle, and parts of Lagos Island.

He called on community leaders, youth groups, religious institutions, and civil society organisations to intensify advocacy and mobilise citizens around the ideals of environmental stewardship and sustainable sanitation practices.

Highlighting the theme of this year’s commemoration — “A Clean Environment for a Healthy Nation”, Wahab noted that good sanitation directly contributes to reduced disease outbreaks, improved quality of life, and increased life expectancy.

Officials from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), LASEPA, and Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) were also on the ground to support the exercise and sensitise residents on proper waste disposal, recycling, and enforcement guidelines.

Residents who participated in the exercise applauded the government’s proactive efforts and called for more regular community-based clean-up drives to sustain the momentum.

The Lagos State Government assured that it will continue to implement policies and programmes aimed at building a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient megacity for all.
