LASPA Issues Stern Warning to Motorists Over Indiscriminate Parking in Lagos

The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) has issued a fresh warning to motorists over the growing trend of indiscriminate parking across the state, describing it as a major contributor to traffic congestion, urban disorder, and road safety hazards.

In a statement released by the agency on Wednesday, LASPA expressed deep concern over the continued disregard for parking regulations by private and commercial vehicle owners, especially in high-density areas of Lagos. The authority warned that defaulters would face strict sanctions in accordance with the state’s parking laws, including fines, towing of vehicles, and possible legal action.

“The Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring a free flow of traffic and the orderly use of public spaces. Indiscriminate parking not only disrupts mobility but also endangers the safety of other road users,” the statement read.

LASPA noted that in recent weeks, its enforcement teams have intensified patrols across key business and residential districts, including Victoria Island, Ikeja, Surulere, Lekki, and parts of the Lagos Mainland, where cases of illegal roadside parking and obstruction of pedestrian walkways have been rampant.

The agency also revealed plans to install more signage and expand digital parking payment systems as part of efforts to modernize and streamline the parking ecosystem in Lagos. Motorists were urged to make use of designated parking areas and follow all stipulated guidelines to avoid penalties.

In addition, LASPA advised property owners and commercial operators who convert road setbacks and pedestrian spaces into illegal parking lots to desist from the practice or face prosecution. The Authority reiterated that reclaiming order in the city’s traffic flow requires the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the driving public.

As Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre continues to grapple with rapid urbanization and population growth, the Lagos State Government has vowed to enforce stricter compliance with traffic and environmental standards, with LASPA at the forefront of implementing reforms in the city’s parking system.

Residents and motorists are encouraged to report cases of illegal parking and obstruction through the LASPA hotline or its online channels.
