LASTMA Trains Senior Officers On Mental Health And Trauma Management

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has conducted a specialized training session for its senior officers, focusing on mental well-being and trauma care as part of efforts to enhance emotional intelligence and psychological resilience within the agency.

The training, held at the LASTMA headquarters in Oshodi, brought together Directors, Comptrollers, Commanders, and Unit Heads from across the agency. The initiative is in line with the Lagos State Government’s broader commitment to improving the welfare and performance of public sector workers.

Renowned mental health advocate, Professor Akindotun Merino — President of JARS Educational Group, USA, and Founder of the Africa Trauma Care Alliance — facilitated the session. He delivered an intensive lecture on trauma awareness, stress management, and mental health support for officers who often operate under high-pressure conditions.

In his remarks, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the need to prioritize the mental health of personnel, especially given the demanding nature of traffic management duties in a megacity like Lagos.

“Our officers are exposed to intense pressure daily, and it is crucial that we equip them not only with physical tools but also with psychological support to carry out their duties with empathy and professionalism,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He added that the agency is committed to continuous staff development through regular training, capacity-building workshops, and the provision of modern safety equipment and operational kits.

Participants at the session commended the agency for taking a progressive step toward supporting the mental well-being of its workforce. Many described the training as timely, impactful, and necessary for improving job performance and interpersonal relations on the field.

The training forms part of LASTMA’s broader human capital development strategy aimed at delivering efficient, humane, and responsive traffic management services to the people of Lagos State.
