Fellows of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) recently held an engaging session with the Lagos State Commissioner for Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Olatunbosun Alake, as part of the Academy’s ongoing Brown Bag leadership series.
The session, themed “Purposeful Leadership and Cultural Values,” provided an opportunity for the fellows to explore the link between ethical leadership, innovation, and national development.
Speaking during the session, Commissioner Alake highlighted the importance of purpose-driven governance, stating that effective leadership must be rooted in integrity, sacrifice, and a deep understanding of cultural dynamics. He emphasized that while technical competence is critical, true leadership also requires character and a willingness to put the greater good above personal interests.
“Leadership is not just about titles or power. It’s about serving with excellence and creating systems that outlast individuals,” Alake said.
He also shared insights into the Ministry’s work to drive innovation and expand digital inclusion across Lagos State, citing ongoing projects in connectivity infrastructure and youth empowerment through technology.
During the interactive dialogue, the Commissioner introduced the Fellows to key cultural concepts such as power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and gratification orientation, which he described as important lenses through which leadership behaviors and national institutions can be understood.
He charged the Fellows to be intentional about the kind of leaders they aspire to be, urging them to embrace values that promote accountability and social progress.
The session forms part of the Academy’s strategic efforts to expose young professionals to the realities of governance, policy implementation, and the responsibilities of public office.
The Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, established by the Lagos State Government, is a one-year fellowship program designed to nurture future leaders through practical experience, mentorship, and academic enrichment.
