LSWMO Seals Residential Apartments in Ilasan, Lekki Peninsula Over Environmental Violations

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has sealed off several residential apartments in Ilasan, Lekki Peninsula II, located within the Eti-Osa Local Government Area, for constituting environmental nuisance due to improper wastewater disposal.

The enforcement action, which took place earlier this week, followed a series of complaints from residents and environmental health assessments that revealed multiple infractions. According to the agency, the affected properties were found to be discharging untreated wastewater directly into public drainage systems and surrounding areas, leading to severe sanitation concerns and offensive odours.

Speaking on the development, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations, stressing that all residents and property owners must comply with the existing sanitation laws and regulations.

“Our investigations showed that these properties not only lacked proper sewage systems but also allowed their septic tanks to overflow into the environment, thereby posing a serious health risk to the community,” Wahab stated. “The Lagos State Government is committed to ensuring that all buildings in the state adhere to standard wastewater management practices. We will not hesitate to sanction any individual or group found contravening the law.”

The LSWMO noted that the sealing of the properties is part of an ongoing effort to curb environmental abuse and encourage responsible sanitation behavior across the state. Property owners in the affected area have been directed to rectify the identified violations before any consideration for reopening will be made.

Residents of Ilasan have applauded the state government’s intervention, expressing relief that long-standing concerns about public health and environmental safety are finally being addressed.

The Lagos State Government continues to urge the public to report similar cases of environmental infractions and to prioritize hygienic living practices to support its mission of building a cleaner and safer megacity.
