Abuja, June 20, 2025 – In a renewed effort to enhance institutional performance and service delivery, the Ministry of Local Government has held a comprehensive staff retreat aimed at re-energising its workforce and aligning internal operations with national development priorities.
The retreat, which brought together directors, departmental heads, and key personnel from across the ministry, focused on strengthening administrative capacity, fostering team spirit, and reviewing operational frameworks for more efficient governance at the grassroots level.
Declaring the retreat open, the Minister of State for Local Government Affairs described the initiative as timely, noting that the ministry plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between federal policies and grassroots implementation. He emphasised the need for public servants to recommit to professionalism, transparency, and people-centered service delivery.
“This retreat offers an opportunity to reflect on our mandate, evaluate past strategies, and chart a more effective path forward,” the Minister said. “If we are to truly empower local councils and improve governance outcomes at the community level, our internal systems must first reflect excellence and integrity.”
Facilitators at the retreat delivered sessions on public sector innovation, local government financing, inter-agency collaboration, and citizen engagement. Emphasis was placed on the strategic role of local government in achieving national development goals, particularly in areas such as primary healthcare, education, sanitation, and rural infrastructure.
Participants expressed appreciation for the opportunity to engage in open dialogue and capacity-building activities, describing the retreat as both enlightening and energising. Many pledged to bring renewed focus and discipline to their respective roles.
The retreat concluded with a call to action for staff to demonstrate accountability, uphold ethical standards, and support the ministry’s reform agenda with renewed commitment.
As local governments continue to grapple with developmental challenges and rising expectations from citizens, the ministry affirmed its readiness to provide stronger oversight, support, and policy direction to drive inclusive growth and democratic governance at the grassroots.
