NAFDAC Issues Alert on Counterfeit Contraceptive Injection in Northern States

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public warning regarding the circulation of counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg in Nigeria.

The agency has identified the fake contraceptive product in Niger, Bauchi, and Kano States, with a significant presence at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre in Kano.

In a statement released on Monday, NAFDAC alerted the public to the dangers of using this counterfeit product, which has been found to be mislabeled and repackaged from Chlorpheniramine and Dexamethasone injection ampoules.

“The counterfeit Noristerat Injection 200mg has been found in Kano, Bauchi, and Niger States. This poses a serious health risk as unsuspecting women may be using a product that offers no contraceptive protection,” the agency stated.

NAFDAC confirmed that the individual responsible for the illegal repackaging has been apprehended, and efforts are underway to remove the counterfeit product from circulation. “We have successfully tracked and arrested the counterfeiter behind this dangerous act. The agency remains committed to ensuring that only genuine and safe medical products are available to the public,” NAFDAC assured.

To help consumers identify and avoid the counterfeit product, NAFDAC provided the following details:

The fake Noristerat Injection bears the registration number 04-5715.
Manufacturing date: September 2022.
Expiry date: September 2027.

Genuine Noristerat 200mg is a contraceptive injection designed to provide eight weeks of pregnancy protection for short-term birth control. The counterfeit version circulating poses a risk of unintended pregnancies and other health complications.

NAFDAC urged the public to exercise vigilance and report any suspicious products to the agency. “We call on healthcare providers, pharmacists, and the general public to report any suspicious Noristerat Injection to NAFDAC. Your cooperation is vital in protecting public health,” the statement emphasized.
