Nasarawa Police Recover AK-47 Rifle, Ammunition, and Motorcycle During Stop-and-Search Operation as Suspect Escapes Arrest

The Nasarawa State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against the illegal movement of arms and criminal elements following the recovery of a loaded AK-47 rifle, ammunition, and a suspected stolen motorcycle during a stop-and-search operation in the Keana Local Government Area of the state.

The discovery was made on Saturday, June 7, 2025, along the Giza-Kadarko Road during a routine but intelligence-driven security operation mounted by operatives of the Giza Police Division. The operation, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ramhan Nansel, was carried out following credible intelligence regarding the suspicious movement of firearms within the area.

Acting on the tip-off, the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, promptly ordered a tactical stop-and-search deployment along key transit points suspected to be routes used by arms traffickers. During the operation at about 4:00 p.m., a man riding an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle was intercepted. However, upon being flagged down for questioning by the officers, the suspect immediately abandoned the motorcycle and fled into a nearby bush, successfully evading arrest.

A thorough search of the motorcycle revealed an AK-47 rifle bearing breach number 0413, two magazines, several rounds of 7.62x39mm live ammunition, and the unregistered motorcycle itself. The items were promptly secured and taken into police custody for further investigation.

Describing the development as a “significant feat,” DSP Nansel emphasized that the recovery lends strong credence to the intelligence received, suggesting that the suspect may have been en route to deliver or utilize the arms for criminal activity, possibly targeting vulnerable communities or for use in banditry.

The police spokesperson also assured members of the public that efforts have been intensified to track down the fleeing suspect and uncover the network behind the illicit arms movement. He noted that further investigations are underway to determine the origin of the weapon, the intended destination, and any accomplices who may be involved in the plot.

The Nasarawa State Police Command has once again called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements or individuals within their communities, adding that public cooperation remains crucial in combating security threats.

Saturday’s incident underscores the ongoing threat posed by illegal arms proliferation in parts of the North-Central region, even as security agencies continue to step up proactive measures to prevent violence and safeguard lives.
