NERC Applauds Power Sector Communications Team, Urges Stronger Synergy and Strategic Public Engagement

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has commended the Power Sector Communications Team (PSCT) for its pivotal role in enhancing transparency and shaping informed public dialogue within Nigeria’s power sector. The Commission also called for deeper collaboration and a more strategic approach to stakeholder engagement as the industry continues to evolve.

This recognition was conveyed by the Vice Chairman of NERC, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, during the PSCT’s monthly meeting held on Tuesday, September 3, 2025, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja. Dr. Oseni, who was represented by NERC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hafsat Mustafa, praised the communications professionals for their contributions to sector-wide coherence and public trust.
According to the Vice Chairman, effective communication remains a cornerstone of the ongoing power sector reform agenda, and the PSCT has demonstrated commendable effort in maintaining a unified and transparent communication front. He, however, urged the team to scale up its impact through more strategic initiatives and stronger inter-agency synergy.

“The PSCT has played a critical role in fostering consistent messaging across the Nigerian power sector,” Mrs. Mustafa stated on behalf of Dr. Oseni. “But to fully meet the expectations of our stakeholders and support the reform process, we must be more deliberate in our communication efforts and foster greater collaboration among member organisations.”

She noted that as the sector navigates new reforms and infrastructure developments, there is an increasing need for communication that is not only timely but also credible, accessible, and solutions-focused. Mrs. Mustafa also stressed the importance of aligning public messaging with the realities of the sector’s progress, challenges, and future goals.

In her response, Ms. Magdalene Abang, Coordinator of the PSCT and Media Team Lead at the FGN Power Company, reaffirmed the team’s commitment to advancing sector-wide communication strategies. She noted that unified messaging and robust media engagement are essential tools in gaining public confidence and driving national support for the power sector’s transformation.

“We understand the value of consistency and collaboration in delivering impactful communication. The PSCT remains committed to improving cross-agency coordination and creating platforms that enable transparent engagement with the public,” Abang said.

The meeting also featured presentations and updates from key member agencies, as well as discussions focused on enhancing communication tools, refining media engagement strategies, and aligning communication narratives with the objectives of Nigeria’s electricity reform journey.

The Power Sector Communications Team, made up of media and communications leads from core power agencies, continues to serve as a vital collaborative platform dedicated to promoting accountability, public awareness, and sector credibility through coordinated messaging and strategic outreach.

As Nigeria pushes ahead with critical reforms in the electricity industry, the role of the PSCT remains central to ensuring that the public remains informed, engaged, and confident in the sector’s direction.
