Abuja, Nigeria | June 16, 2025 –
Transportation and road safety experts have revealed that Nigeria loses over N800 billion annually to road traffic crashes, citing poor infrastructure, reckless driving, and weak enforcement of traffic regulations as major contributing factors.
The disclosure was made during a national road safety conference held in Abuja, where stakeholders gathered to discuss strategies for reducing fatalities and economic losses caused by road accidents.
Dr. Femi Oladapo, a transportation economist, explained that the losses include the cost of emergency response, medical treatment, loss of productivity, vehicle damage, and long-term disability support. “Nigeria is facing a silent economic and human disaster on its roads. The N800 billion is a conservative estimate,” he said.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reports that thousands of lives are lost yearly, with over 10,000 road accidents recorded in 2024 alone. Officials blame most of the crashes on overspeeding, fatigue, and poorly maintained vehicles.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, called for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments, improved road design, regular driver education, and the establishment of trauma centres along major highways.
The federal government has pledged to implement comprehensive road safety reforms as part of its National Road Transport Policy.
