The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) is considering extending its trading hours from the current 9:30 AM–2:30 PM to 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. The proposal was discussed during a Zoom meeting on Tuesday with over 120 market operators, including NGX CEO Jude Chiemeka and Sam Onukwue, Chairman of the Association of Securities Dealing Houses of Nigeria.
Under the proposed schedule, the pre-open would start at 9:00 AM, pre-close would be at 4:50 PM, and market close would be at 5:00 PM. The consideration aligns with global trends, as stock exchanges worldwide extend trading hours to accommodate retail investors and improve market accessibility. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange is also reportedly exploring 24-hour trading to match global market trends.
The NGX is yet to confirm a final implementation date, and stakeholders continue to evaluate the potential operational and market impacts of the proposed changes.
