Nigerians in Portugal to Enjoy Zero Tax on Foreign Income

Lisbon, Portugal – June 15, 2025

Nigerians residing in Portugal are set to benefit from a new tax policy that exempts them from paying taxes on income earned outside the country.

The development follows recent tax reforms introduced by the Portuguese government aimed at attracting foreign professionals and investors. Under the new regime, Portugal has waived taxes on foreign-earned income for residents who do not transfer such earnings into the country through local banking systems.

This move is expected to benefit many Nigerians in the diaspora, especially those working remotely for foreign companies or receiving earnings from investments abroad. Experts say the measure will provide significant financial relief and promote economic participation among migrant communities.

According to Portugal’s tax authorities, the reform is part of efforts to make the country more appealing to global talent and digital nomads amid a competitive European landscape.

A senior official at the Nigerian Embassy in Lisbon confirmed the development, noting that it aligns with Portugal’s recent “non-habitual resident” (NHR) program reforms, which grant certain tax benefits to foreign nationals residing in the country.

Nigerian professionals and entrepreneurs in Portugal have welcomed the policy, describing it as a progressive step toward diaspora empowerment and financial inclusion.

Portugal currently hosts a growing Nigerian community engaged in various sectors including technology, health care, academia, and the arts.
