Obi Breaks Silence on Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention, Reveals What He’ll Do If Elected President

July 7, 2025

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has spoken out on the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, stating that his prolonged incarceration is a reflection of deeper national disunity and the failure of dialogue-based governance.

Speaking during a live interactive session in Abuja on Sunday, Obi emphasized the need to prioritize justice, fairness, and national reconciliation as core principles in resolving internal conflicts. He stated that if elected President, he would adopt a non-violent and inclusive approach to resolving issues related to self-determination and agitation in the South-East and across other regions.

“I believe in the rule of law, equity, and justice. Nnamdi Kanu’s case should not be treated in isolation but as part of a broader national conversation on how to unite our country, heal wounds, and restore peace through dialogue and understanding,” Obi said.

He maintained that the continued detention of Kanu, despite various court rulings, undermines the credibility of the judiciary and deepens regional discontent. According to him, “A nation cannot build unity when it selectively applies justice.”

While distancing himself from IPOB’s methods, Obi said his focus as a leader would be to engage all aggrieved segments of society, stressing that grievances must be addressed with sincerity, not suppression.

The former Anambra State Governor’s comments have stirred conversations among political watchers, with many noting that his balanced tone may resonate with voters seeking an end to longstanding national tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
