Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has commended the Super Eagles for their determination and fighting spirit despite their 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Tuesday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
Obi, who attended the match at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, expressed his admiration for the team in a post on X.com on Wednesday.
“Yesterday, I joined fellow Nigerians in Uyo to support the Super Eagles as they faced Zimbabwe in their sixth World Cup qualifying match,” Obi wrote. “While we did not secure a win, our players demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship and dedication, earning our pride and appreciation.”
He added, “I commend our national team and everyone whose efforts contributed to this journey. Their hard work was not in vain.”
The match saw Nigeria take the lead in the 74th minute through a goal by Victor Osimhen, but Zimbabwe equalized in stoppage time, leaving the Super Eagles with only one point. The result further complicates Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Fans have expressed mixed reactions to the team’s performance, with many criticizing their lack of coordination and over-reliance on individual talent.
