The Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its dedication to fighting the growing cancer burden through strengthened healthcare programs and improved access to screening and treatment facilities. This commitment comes amid rising cancer cases across Nigeria, with the disease remaining one of the leading causes of health-related fatalities in the country.
Speaking during a cancer awareness program held in Abeokuta, the state capital, the Commissioner for Health emphasized the administration’s determination to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality rates through early detection and intervention strategies.
“Cancer remains a significant public health challenge that requires a comprehensive approach involving prevention, early detection, and effective treatment options,” the Commissioner stated while addressing healthcare professionals and community stakeholders at the event. “Our administration is fully committed to expanding access to cancer care services across all three senatorial districts of the state.”
According to information gathered by KIIN360, the state government has initiated several measures to combat the cancer scourge, including the procurement of advanced diagnostic equipment for early detection, training of healthcare workers in cancer screening protocols, and establishment of referral pathways to ensure timely treatment.
The state’s renewed commitment reportedly includes plans to strengthen existing cancer care units at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital and other state-owned healthcare facilities, while also exploring public-private partnerships to bring specialized cancer treatment closer to residents.
A senior oncologist at one of the state’s public hospitals revealed to KIIN360 that the government’s intensified focus on cancer control has already begun yielding results, with increased uptake of screening services for common cancers including breast, cervical, and prostate cancer.
“We’re seeing more patients coming forward for screening, which is crucial because early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes,” the specialist explained. “The government’s commitment has translated to improved infrastructure and capacity building for healthcare providers.”
Community health advocates have welcomed the state’s renewed pledge, though some emphasized the need for sustained funding and implementation of the outlined programs to effectively address the cancer burden in the state.
