The petrol crisis in Niger Republic is gradually easing following the supply of fuel from Nigeria, leading to a drop in pump prices in the West African country.
Fuel Supply from Nigeria
Multiple residents and security sources confirmed that hundreds of petrol tankers have been dispatched from Nigeria to Niger Republic. This follows a recent agreement between the Nigerian government and the military junta in Niger to supply 300 truckloads of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to ease the crisis.
On March 16, 2025, Sunday PUNCH reported that Niger Republic had sought Nigeria’s assistance to address its worsening fuel shortage, despite months of diplomatic tensions between the two nations. A delegation from Niger traveled to Abuja for negotiations, leading to an agreement for fuel supply.
Strategic Negotiations
A senior Nigerian government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the fuel deal was approved as a strategic bargaining tool in ongoing talks with Niger’s leaders.
“We do not want to publicize this, but we see it as a bargaining chip in our efforts to bring Niger back into ECOWAS. They need support, and we hope this will help rebuild diplomatic relations.”
Impact on Fuel Prices
Following the fuel deliveries, petrol prices in Niger Republic have dropped significantly from about ₦10,000/litre (4,800 CFA) to ₦5,000/litre (2,000 CFA).
A resident of Agadez, Faruku Lawali, confirmed the situation was improving, stating:
“The fuel supply has helped tremendously. Though queues remain, the situation is far better than before. We appreciate Nigeria’s support.”
Similarly, Usman Aliyu, a commercial bus driver operating between Nigeria and Niger Republic, commended the Nigerian government for its intervention:
“Nigeria’s help proves that blood is thicker than water. This intervention has saved businesses and livelihoods.”
Border Security Confirms Fuel Movements
A security officer stationed at Nigeria’s Illela border, speaking anonymously, confirmed the movement of fuel tankers into Niger Republic:
“Tankers carrying fuel have been passing through, with security agencies verifying necessary documents before allowing transit.”
