Rivers Lawmakers Move to Sack Deputy Governor Ahead of Governor’s Impeachment

Rivers State House of Assembly members loyal to former FCT Minister Nyesom Wike have launched impeachment proceedings against both Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu.

A notice dated March 14, 2025—signed by 26 out of 32 assembly members—accuses Deputy Governor Odu of gross misconduct, alongside separate allegations of reckless and unconstitutional expenditure levelled against Governor Fubara. The document alleges violations under Sections 120, 121 (1)(2), and 122 of the 1999 Constitution .

Speaker Martins Amaewhule confirmed receipt of the impeachment notice and stated it has been distributed among members and forwarded to both the governor’s office and deputy as required by Section 188 of the Constitution .

In response, the Rivers State government urged the Assembly to reconsider its actions and reflect on the implications for governance and stability in the state .
