Senate Steps In to Clear ₦81bn N-Power Arrears, Paves Way for Beneficiary Payments

News Report – July 23, 2025

Thousands of N-Power beneficiaries may soon receive long-awaited payments as the Nigerian Senate has stepped in to resolve issues delaying the disbursement of ₦81 billion in outstanding allowances.

The Senate’s intervention led to a high-level meeting involving the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, and other relevant stakeholders, aimed at unblocking the bureaucratic bottlenecks that have stalled payments to former and current N-Power participants.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the discussions, emphasized the urgency of settling the arrears, citing the financial hardships many beneficiaries have endured due to the prolonged delay. He urged the Ministry to fast-track verification processes and ensure transparency in the eventual payment.

The N-Power programme, launched in 2016 as part of the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIPs), has employed hundreds of thousands of Nigerian youths in various sectors including education, health, and agriculture. However, disruptions in the system—especially in the past year—left many workers unpaid, sparking nationwide outcry.

Minister Edu, while addressing the Senate, confirmed that the Ministry had concluded a comprehensive audit of verified beneficiaries and assured that payments would commence once final clearance from the finance authorities is secured.

Beneficiaries across the country have expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the Senate’s intervention would finally bring relief after months of waiting.
