STOCKHOLM, August 4, 2025 — Global music streaming giant Spotify has officially announced that it will increase the prices of its Premium subscription plans across all markets starting in September 2025, citing rising operational costs and the need to support continued investment in content and innovation.
In a statement issued from its headquarters in Stockholm, Spotify said the adjustment would affect individual, duo, family, and student plans, with exact increments varying by country. While the company did not disclose a uniform price structure, early indications show that in several regions, including the United States and parts of Europe, Premium Individual plans may rise by approximately $1 to $2 monthly.
The company noted that existing subscribers will receive a 30-day notice before the new pricing takes effect, allowing users time to review their subscription options or make changes. This marks the second time in just over a year that Spotify has raised its subscription fees globally, as it attempts to balance profit margins with expansion and licensing obligations to artists and record labels.
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek defended the move, stating that the price review was necessary to “keep delivering value to both listeners and creators” and to support new features such as audiobooks, podcasts, and exclusive music experiences. He stressed that the company remains committed to enhancing user experience while ensuring fair compensation across the streaming ecosystem.
Industry analysts believe the increase could also signal a broader trend among digital streaming platforms, many of which have implemented similar hikes in recent quarters to maintain profitability in a competitive and inflation-affected market.
As of mid-2025, Spotify boasts more than 615 million active users, including 245 million Premium subscribers worldwide.
