Thailand Replaces ETA With Digital Arrival Card for Visa-Free Travellers

Bangkok, July 28, 2025

The Thai government has officially announced the replacement of its previously planned Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system with a new digital arrival card for travellers entering the country under its visa-free policy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the digital arrival card, which will be implemented from August 2025, is aimed at simplifying travel procedures, improving border security, and enhancing the tourist experience for citizens of eligible countries. The card will serve as a modernised version of the traditional paper arrival card and can be completed online before departure.

This development marks a shift in Thailand’s immigration strategy, as the government moves toward a fully digital and seamless entry process. The digital card will collect essential traveller information including flight details, accommodation, and contact data, and will be integrated with immigration systems at all international entry points.

Officials clarified that this system is only applicable to travellers from visa-free countries and does not substitute existing visa or permit requirements for other categories of visitors. Authorities also assured that user data will be protected under the country’s data protection regulations.

Thailand’s tourism ministry expects this move to further boost the sector, which has shown significant recovery in 2025, with projections exceeding 35 million foreign arrivals by year-end. The digital arrival card is one of several reforms introduced to ease entry barriers and maintain Thailand’s competitiveness as a top travel destination in Southeast Asia.
