Abuja, Nigeria — August 17, 2025 | President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Opeyemi Agbaje as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), in a move aimed at reinforcing the administration’s commitment to pension sector reforms.
The Presidency confirmed the appointment on Saturday, noting that it aligns with government efforts to safeguard workers’ retirement benefits and strengthen regulatory oversight of Nigeria’s pension industry.
Agbaje, a respected financial expert, policy analyst, and strategist, is expected to leverage his experience in economics, governance, and institutional reform to reposition PenCom for greater efficiency. His leadership comes at a critical time, as the commission faces mounting demands for improved transparency, accountability, and prompt settlement of retirees’ entitlements.
Established under the Pension Reform Act of 2004, PenCom regulates and supervises the pension industry in Nigeria. With Agbaje now at the helm, stakeholders are optimistic that his appointment will drive reforms aimed at enhancing public confidence, expanding pension coverage—particularly within the informal sector—and ensuring more effective management of pension funds.
