UK Court Sets June 3 for Trial of Spanish-Brazilian Suspect in Murder of Nigerian Teenager

The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, widely known as the Old Bailey, has set June 3 as the trial date for Marcus Monzo, a Spanish-Brazilian man charged with the alleged murder of 14-year-old Nigerian teenager, Daniel Anjorin, in the United Kingdom.

Monzo, aged 37, who refers to himself as a “mystic musician,” appeared before the court following his arrest in connection with the fatal stabbing of Anjorin on April 30, 2024, in Hainault, North-East London. The teenager was reportedly attacked while on his way to school and was fatally slashed in the chest and neck with two Japanese swords.

British media reports, including the Daily Mail, indicate that Monzo is also accused of launching a violent 20-minute rampage, during which he assaulted four other individuals. Along with the murder charge, he faces charges related to the attempted murders of Donato Iwule, Sindy Arias, Henry Polania, and Yasmin Mechem-Whitfield. Additionally, Monzo is accused of wounding a police inspector, Moloy Campbell, with intent.

Monzo has denied the charges, maintaining his innocence in relation to the murder of Anjorin and the attempted murders of the others. At Westminster Magistrates’ Court, earlier hearings revealed further details about the incident. Monzo allegedly drove a van into a fence in Laing Close, hitting pedestrian Iwule. Following the crash, he is said to have brandished a sword and indiscriminately attacked pedestrians, with Anjorin tragically becoming one of the victims.

The teenager was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

As the legal process continues, the case remains under intense scrutiny, especially due to the violent nature of the attack and its impact on the local community. The upcoming trial at the Old Bailey is expected to shed more light on the events leading to Anjorin’s untimely death.
