Umuahia Set to Host National U-12, U-15 Handball Championships

The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has confirmed Umuahia, Abia State, as the host city for this year’s National Under-12 and Under-15 Handball Championships. The weeklong event is scheduled to run from March 18 to March 25, with teams expected to arrive and undergo mandatory age verification screenings on March 18 and 19. Competitive matches will commence on March 20.

In a statement issued by HFN Secretary-General Monica Otumala, the federation stressed the importance of strict adherence to age eligibility rules. A rigorous screening exercise on March 19 will verify the ages of all participants, with severe sanctions threatened for states, academies, or clubs found guilty of fielding overage players.

“All participating teams must ensure their athletes fall within the designated age categories. Any violations will result in appropriate penalties, and only players who pass the screening will be cleared to compete,” Otumala warned.

The tournament will not only crown national champions in both age groups but will also serve as a qualifier for international youth competitions. According to the HFN, winning teams will earn the right to represent Nigeria at global handball events designated by the federation.

The championships aim to foster grassroots talent development while promoting fairness and integrity in youth sports. Stakeholders anticipate fierce competition as teams vie for national honors and a chance to shine on the international stage.
