UNIZIK Suspends Medical Centre Staff, Security Over Death of First-Year Law Student

Awka, Anambra State — August 25, 2025

Authorities at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, have suspended doctors, nurses, and security personnel attached to the university’s medical centre following the death of a 100-level Law student, Miss Isabella (Chioma) Ajana.

The suspension was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, and made available to journalists in Awka.

Ajana, a diabetic, died on July 4, 2025 after being unable to access her life-saving insulin, which was locked inside her hostel room at Elmada Hostel. The student and her roommates had misplaced their room key, and efforts to retrieve a spare reportedly failed due to either the absence of the key custodian or, according to some accounts, an alleged payment demand.

She suffered a medical crisis on June 30 and was taken first to the university’s medical centre before being referred to a teaching hospital, where she later died. Her death was publicly disclosed on July 8.

The university has since constituted a panel to investigate the incident, focusing on the response of hostel management and the medical team. The outcome of the investigation is still pending.
